Thrifting for a Vintage Wedding Gown
Cara E Gettings
With the outbreak in twenty-somethings having a newfound love for vintage items, vintage wedding dresses are not as easy to come by.
The era of vintage wedding dresses you are trying to locate for your special day depends on the location in which you live. The styles ranging between the 1920s and the 1980s are vastly different, since those eras they are very different in fabrics and styles.
From the flappers of the ‘20s who wore loose tube styles in a daffodil color as opposed to white or ivory, to the ‘80s, where every was big from the sleeves to the slips, a bride was not a bride without a puffy big dress. So again the difference between eras is large; and if you are seeking a vintage wedding dress you need to discover which era you like the styles of the best.
Start with mom or grandma for your vintage dress. Both or either of them might be on board with you wearing their own wedding dresses. If you do not like their dresses, no worries! Find your local thrift store; generally there are vintage wedding dresses in almost every thrift store. Etsy.com is also a place you can use to search for a vintage dress; that website is the hub of everything vintage and handmade.
Now you just need to select the type of fabric and style you would like to wear. If lace is your cup of tea then look for a dress in the 1950s. If you are seeking a modest suit look for something from the 1940s during the war when there was no fabric allowed for wedding dresses — all fabric was destined for war materials. Then there are the 1970s where dresses were flowing and pants suits became acceptable as well. Good luck on the hunt!
